A BoldVoice alternative makes sense when you want your pronunciation to hold up outside the lesson. Speakle is free to start and keeps the sound-level work: every sound scored with rhythm and intonation, the hardest ones for your first language first. Then it puts those sounds under real conditions, in daily scored answers, on calls with a live AI video coach on paid plans, and in video practice with other learners at your level.

What BoldVoice is, and what it does well

What BoldVoice is

BoldVoice is an accent training app. It analyses your speech sound by sound, shows how each sound is shaped with mouth diagrams, and teaches through video lessons from professional Hollywood accent coaches. American English is its core, other accents are available, and lessons adapt to your native language.

What BoldVoice is genuinely better at

Expert teaching on the mechanics of sound. BoldVoice’s video lessons come from professional accent coaches who know how to explain where the tongue goes and why, and its mouth diagrams make an invisible movement visible. For a learner working seriously on an American accent, being taught by people who coach actors is a real draw, and the sound-level analysis gives that teaching a precise target.

Where its design puts its weight

The practice is built mostly around scripted drills: a word, a phrase or a passage you are given, practised until the sound is right. That is the cleanest way to fix a sound, and it keeps the hardest part of speaking out of the frame. A sound that is solid in a script can still slip when you are choosing your own words at speed, and that unplanned moment is the one listeners actually hear.

Cambridge English estimates that each level takes roughly another two hundred hours of guided learning. The hours vary with the learner and with how much they practise between lessons, which is why a little speaking every day matters more than an occasional long session.

The pronunciation page in Speakle opens with the sounds that matter for your first language, not a list every learner shares. Each sound moves through stages, and the last stage is your own unplanned speech, because that is where a sound either holds or slips. Your daily session scores pronunciation alongside fluency, grammar, vocabulary and coherence, so you can see whether clearer sounds are costing you speed. Listening practice in twelve English accents trains your ear for the people you will actually talk to, and on paid plans the live AI video coach gives you whole conversations to put it all to work.

Speakle · the English practice app for fluency and confidence

One app for everything that gets you speaking

Most apps train one piece: words, sounds or a chat window. Speakle puts the whole road to fluent, confident English in one place, and every part of it ends with you speaking.

  • The AI video coach page: a real video call with an AI coach, a suggested next call, and how a call worksLive coachFace to face with an AI coach, on videoJob interviews, debates, travel, IELTS speaking or an open conversation. The coach stays in role for the whole call and nothing is scripted.

  • A pronunciation listening round: which word do you hear, tree or threePronunciationPronunciation from your first languageSounds your language merges come first; sounds it already gives you are skipped.
  • Video conversation: get matched with another learner at your level for a ten-minute English conversation, then get coachedPeopleReal learners, on videoTen minutes with another learner at your level, then coaching on what you both said.
  • A course step: a speaking task to arrange a meeting, phrases worth trying, and a microphone button to answer out loudCourseA course where every step is spoken109 units from A1 to C2. Each step is a real task you say out loud, not tiles to tap.

Using BoldVoice and Speakle together

If you are working on your accent with real intent, the two make a sensible pair. Let BoldVoice’s coaches show you how a sound is made: where the tongue sits, what the lips do, how it feels when you get it right. Then bring that sound into Speakle and see whether it stays when nobody hands you the words. A daily scored answer on a topic you did not plan tells you which sounds have moved into your normal speech and which still need the drill. Over a few weeks that record is the clearest proof that the work is paying off.

The short version of the argument

Recognising

  • Tap the right option
  • Match the pairs
  • Repeat a sentence you were given

What most practice trains

Producing

  • Find the words yourself
  • Say them out loud
  • While someone waits for you

What speaking needs

Recognising the right answer and producing it are different skills, and most practice trains the first. Tapping the right option, matching pairs and repeating a sentence you were given can all be done without finding a single word yourself, which is why people who understand English well still freeze when they have to speak it. We call this the recognition trap. The way out is spoken practice, short and daily, answered in your own words. The full explanation, with the memory research behind it, is its own page.

Students who reread a passage four times remembered the most after five minutes, and the least a week later. Students who read it once and then tried to recall it three times forgot far less. Pulling words out of your own memory, which is what speaking asks of you, is what made them last.

The same people read some words aloud and some silently. Afterwards they recognised the words they had said aloud clearly more often. Saying something makes it more memorable than only seeing it, one reason spoken practice beats silent tapping for anything you want to say later.

A modern replication of Ebbinghaus measured how much faster a list could be relearned after each delay. Most of the benefit is gone within a day or two unless the material is used again, which is why a daily return to speaking matters more than a long session once a week.
